CROSS-LINES COMMUNITY OUTREACH INC

KANSAS CITY, Kansas, 66105 United States

Mission Statement

Cross-Lines’ mission is to provide people in the Kansas City area affected by poverty with services and opportunities that encourage self-confidence, meet the needs of today, and provide tools for future self-sufficiency. Cross-Lines was built on a simple idea — that poverty borne problems could be answered best by looking to the community for solutions and working together to tackle them. In 1963, a group of ministers and concerned citizens joined together to improve the plight of the poor. For more than 50 years Cross-Lines Community Outreach, supported by a network of businesses, churches and individuals, has provided a daily safety net of services for at-risk families, the elderly and individuals. Throughout our history, Cross-Lines has provided numerous programs and services in our community. Our programs and services have evolved over the years. We continually evaluate the needs of the community and our funding capacity to develop programs that meet the needs of people experiencing poverty today and are financially sustainable now and in the future. Cross-Lines was established in 1963 as "a place of hope" for those struggling with the hardships of poverty. We are a safety net for our community. We provide direct assistance to at-risk families, the elderly, and single individuals struggling to make ends meet. Cross-Lines has three main programs: - Housing Stabilization: serving Wyandotte County - Hunger Relief: serving Wyandotte, Johnson and Leavenworth County - Basic Needs: serving Wyandotte County

About This Cause

Many of the challenges identified in 1963 are still basic needs in our community today. The faces have changed, but the same challenges exist for those in poverty. As other organizations have come and gone, Cross-Lines remains steadfast as a community resource. Many of Cross-Lines participants have recently experienced job loss, a cut in hours and/or a medical crisis causing absence from work. Our qualified case managers and emergency assistance staff work tirelessly to provide our clients with services and education to stabilize their current situation and work toward improving their lives. Under the leadership of a committed 13-member Board of Directors, Cross-Lines' dedication to serving the poor in our community remains resolute more than 50 years later. Cross-Lines is committed to providing the marginalized members of the community with essential needs, such as food, clothing, and rent and utility assistance. Goals Cross-Lines remains committed to assisting those in need with services important to their survival and their self-respect. Maintaining self-sufficiency is critical, and Cross-Lines is a vital partner helping individuals and families in Wyandotte County break or avoid entering the cycle of poverty. Cross-Lines not only addresses the problems associated with poverty by providing "survival" fixes, such as food, clothing, medical, and financial emergency assistance; the self-sufficiency programs pair the survival services with programs that move the participants toward transforming their lives. Self-sufficiency programs tackle poverty through engaging clients, as appropriate, in training and support that includes life skills and personal systems management. A key component is helping participants become accountable and responsible for the variables they can control in their lives. The goal is to instill a sense of responsibility, value, and hope, while coordinating a comprehensive set of services to help each individual achieve their personal goals and realize their potential. Clients find support through a team that includes case managers, including one bi-lingual case manager to work with those who are more comfortable speaking Spanish. Audience Served While most of our programs benefit Wyandotte County residents, we also serve Commodities clients in Johnson and Leavenworth counties, and the geographic breakdown is 93% Wyandotte County, 5% Johnson County, and 2% Leavenworth County. All of our clients are at or below 150% of Federal Poverty Level (FPL). In general, our clients' ethnic demographics are 40% Hispanic; 32% African American; 24% White; 4% Other.
