THE LAND INSTITUTE

SALINA, Kansas, 67401-9051 United States

Mission Statement

Developing perennial grain crops and agricultural systems that lower fossil fuel dependence, greenhouse gases, toxic agrochemical runoff and oceanic hypoxic zones all while preserving soil and providing food security.

About This Cause

The Land Institute, founded in 1976 in Salina, Kan., is focused on developing, through natural plant breeding, perennial grain crops to be grown in mixtures. Perennial grain fields, in place from season to season, would mimic the diversity and soil-holding characteristics of the prairie and other natural ecosystems. Farmers would be freed from continual cultivation, which exposes soil to erosion, and the need for heavy applications of fertilizers and chemicals. This revolutionary change would deliver long-term sustainability in the production of grain, the cornerstone of humanity’s diet, and provide greater food security.
