Mission Statement

The mission of the Uriel E. Owens Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Midwest is to provide information and awareness about Sickle Cell Disease, to advocate for the needs of persons with Sickle Cell, and support research to find a cure. Besides education and awareness, the Association provides emergency financial assistance, referral services, and educational scholarships for sickle cell patients. All raised funds remain local and benefit patients throughout Kansas and the entire Kansas City Metro area.

About This Cause

The late Uriel Owens, who had sickle cell disease, had long expressed the view that sickle cell disease patients and their families should have some type of organization to assist them in many ways. After the death of Owens on October 16, 1980, family members and close friends decided to establish such an organization. This organization would serve as a memorial to Owens, who had contributed greatly to the community, and it would also serve the needs of the persons with sickle cell disease. Thus, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America-Uriel Owens Chapter was founded on January 19, 1981.
