About This Cause
Operating under the National Guidelines for Integrated Student Supports, SparkWheel is a multi-level organization delivering an evidence-based program through Student Support Coordinators (SSCs) who work full-time in schools. SparkWheel incorporates a holistic approach to programming by providing wrap-around supports to address student barriers to learning. Daily, SparkWheel staff witness students who cannot focus, study, and grow into their potential because they lack food, safe housing and other essential needs. Our staff work alongside school administrators, educators, staff and parents/caregivers to ensure that every student, regardless of race, zip code, or socioeconomic background has what they need to realize their potential both in and out of school. Together, we build a powerful change movement made up of peers, students, and alumni committed to shaping an equitable path to education for future generations. The SparkWheel Model benefits historically underserved students. Students with multiple risk factors: chronic poverty, exposure to high-risk and traumatic situations, students who struggle to make meaningful connections with peers and adults due to a lack of parent engagement and family instability. SparkWheel was established in 1995 as Communities In Schools of Kansas. July 1, 2023, the organization left the national affiliate network of Communities In Schools to become an independent non-profit, SparkWheel. Today, it serves more than 30,000 students in 60-plus schools throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. The organization remains primarily school-based. However, as an independent nonprofit organization, SparkWheel will continue serving pre-K through post-secondary education, as well as have the option to provide new, exciting, original programs and services.
