About This Cause

Christina Cultural Arts Center (CCAC) has been a major no-profit institution in Wilmington, Delaware for 75 years. Founded in 1945 by the Women’s Club of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Christina Community Center of Old Swedes originated from the settlement house movement to assist immigrants transitioning to North American cities. In 1948, Christina was designated as a United Way agency. Until the early 1950s, the community center was segregated and did not admit African Americans into its programs. Changing neighborhood demographics in the 1950s and 1960s, strategies to reduce duplication of services and other civil rights trends prompted a revision of the organization’s mission. After completion of a community needs assessment in 1969, the Christina Community Center of Old Swedes was re-named and designated a center for the teaching of performing and visual arts. The preservation and celebration of African American culture was emphasized through arts programming. Following a successful $3 million capital campaign in 1983, CCAC relocated its headquarters to Wilmington’s downtown business district to become a key player in the economical/cultural revitalization of the city. In 1996, CCAC leadership founded Kuumba Academy, a high performing, arts integrated K-8 charter school.
