Mission Statement

Our mission is to maximize the community's resources to improve the quality of life for all Delawareans.

About This Cause

Since 1946 United Way of Delaware (UWDE) has connected individuals and organizations and mobilized resources, through advocacy, volunteerism and funding, to create short and long-term change. UWDE is a community leader, convener and community stakeholder serving to advance the human condition for those Delawareans in need. By working collaboratively with our partners to deliver innovative solutions with our communities, we can create measurable and lasting collective impact. Our key strategic focus is three-fold: Grade-Level Reading, College and Career Success, and Financial Empowerment. We have placed critical emphasis on preparing children, birth through age eight, to succeed in school and read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. We offer programs that help our young people to acquire and develop the skills that lead to academic achievement and workplace success. We are developing and supporting programs that help families and individuals get back on their feet and plan for the future. We have identified eight Promise Communities (17 zip codes) across Delaware and two in Salem County, New Jersey, where we, along with our partners, aim to tackle complex problems with creative solutions. Research shows that these communities have barriers like inadequate transportation, inter-generational poverty, lack of affordable housing and limited local employment opportunities that can be obstacles to accessing the services that help create success for children and families.
