Mission Statement

The Center for Hope & Safety (formerly Mid-Valley Women's Crisis Service) serves survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking.

About This Cause

The Center for Hope & Safety (previously known as Mid-Valley Women’s Crisis Service) has served the Marion County community since 1973 when community volunteers organized a rape crisis line. During the first eight years, the number of calls to the crisis line increased from 112 the first year to over 5,800. Today, the Center for Hope & Safety averages approximately 21 ,000 contacts to our program per year. In 1991 the crisis line became bilingual, offering crisis and referral to Spanish speaking victims in our community. In 1998, we began using an interpreting service, allowing us access to more than 140 different languages. To date, we have received more than 277,000 calls on our crisis line. With funding from the City of Salem Community Development program, the agency bought a shelter in 1981. Today, 250-500 adults and children reside in shelter each year. To date, we have provided more than 115,000 nights of shelter to adults and children. When the first paid staff people were hired in 1977, workers formed a support group for women who are abused. That group has met continuously since that year. A second support group was added in 1990 allowing more women to attend support group. A support group for women who speak Spanish was added in 1991. In 2001, a support group for Spanish speaking women was added in Woodburn. Almost from the beginning staff and volunteers at the Center for Hope & Safety worked to educate the community. Since we began tracking statistics in 1984, the agency has provided training to over 120,000 community members. The Center for Hope & Safety averages more than 250 speaking engagements and trainings each year. Since February of 2008, staff members have provided training to more than 5,000 State of Oregon employees on domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking in the workplace. In 2010, the Mid-Valley Men Against Violence group was formed. Men from different walks of life came together in cooperation with Center for Hope & Safety staff to educate themselves and learn ways to address men’s violence again women and children in in our community. The MVMAV group walked in parades and supported Mid-Valley’s fundraisers and activities. The Center for Hope & Safety received 1.7 FTE positions and two advocates were hired to work within the Child Welfare and Self-Sufficiency offices in Marion County. In 2014, an additional bilingual co-located advocate was added for Child Welfare. We now employ 14 staff members (13.7 FTE). For more than 20 years, the Advocacy Office was located on Winter St NE in Salem (pictured at right). In 2014, the program moved to a much-needed larger office to better serve the community. The Center for Hope & Safety is now in downtown Salem at the corner of Center & Church in downtown Salem.
