About This Cause

Since 1975 Meals on Wheels Plus, Incorporated has provided home delivered meals for Individuals living in the Abilene, Texas area who are unable to provide balanced meals for themselves and need this service. In Dec. 2021 Meals on Wheels was providing hot noon meals for 1,400 frail seniors and adults with one or more disabilities. The meals were delivered by approximately 800 trained volunteers. Meals on Wheels has kitchen and office space at 717 North 10th Street, Abilene, Texas. The office is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office remains open through the noon hour each day of operation. The Meals on Wheels kitchen is open from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The kitchen also remains open through the noon hour each day of operation. Meals on Wheels Plus, Inc. prepares nutritious meals for delivery during the lunch hour each Monday through Friday. The meals are delivered to the homes of frail individuals who need this service by trained volunteer deliverers who pick up the meals between 10:45 a.m. and 12 noon for delivery. Most routes can be delivered within 60 minutes of the time they are picked up. As the volunteers deliver lunch they also check on the safety and well-being of each person they visit. Meals on Wheels Plus provides meals for persons in the Abilene, Ballinger, Eula, Hamlin, Hawley, Hodges, Ovalo, Potosi, Rowena and Winters area. Those eligible for the service are either seniors, age 60 or older, or they are adults who have one or more disabilities, and are 18 through 59 years old. Each client is served regardless of their financial status but must have a need for the service. The majority of those served are living on a fixed, low income and receive their meals free of charge. However, we do request a contribution for the service from those who do not qualify as low income. Many Meals on Wheels clients have multiple health problems and are unable to provide balanced meals for themselves. As a result, they suffer from the effects of poor nutrition. Poor nutrition is one of the chief causes of frequent hospitalization and premature institutional placement in a nursing home. A large number of those persons served by Meals on Wheels Plus have few visitors other than the volunteer who delivers their noon meal. Many of them may feel alienated and develop emotional and/or mental disorders as a result of this isolation and deprivation. The daily social contact with caring volunteers who deliver meals helps to prevent emotional and mental depressions which are synonymous with social isolation. From time to time the volunteers also discover persons who have fallen, or experienced another life threatening situation, and by taking appropriate action, obtain help for the person in distress. This is an important part of the service provided by Meals on Wheels Plus since many of those enrolled on the program live alone. Volunteers frequently report other unmet needs they discover as they go into the homes of the elderly and adults with disabilities. Referrals are made to other agencies in an attempt to meet those additional needs.
