Mission Statement
Legal Services for Children provides free representation to children and youth who require legal assistance to stabilize their lives and realize their full potential. Through a holistic team approach utilizing legal advocacy and social work services, our goal is to empower clients and actively involve them in the critical decisions that impact their lives. LSC uses this model to achieve safety and stability at home, educational success, and freedom from detention and deportation for our clients.
About This Cause
Legal Services for Children is a non-profit legal services and social work provider offering free legal advocacy, social-emotional support, information, advice, and referrals to low-income children and youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our services help young people who need legal support with guardianship (changing who the young person’s legal guardian is), dependency (foster care), education (with a focus on expulsion defense), and immigration (help securing a path to lawful immigration status for undocumented minors, assistance with DACA applications, and support for minors who are in, or have recently been released from, immigration detention in Northern California). Founded in 1975, LSC is one of the first non-profit law firms in the nation dedicated to providing free legal and social work services to children. Legal Services for Children’s attorneys represent children in legal matters that involve immigration, guardianship, foster care, and education/school discipline. Because we believe that legal interventions alone cannot change the lives of our clients, LSC also provides social work services to ensure that children’s physical health, mental health, education, and other needs are met. LSC also provides information, advice and counsel, and/or referrals through our telephone warmline and other intake venues, as well as outreach, trainings and technical assistance other youth-serving organizations. Using what we learn from our clients, LSC works to influence systems on a large scale by crafting, sponsoring, and implementing policy changes that benefit youth throughout California. LSC works with the private bar, and recruits, trains, and mentors a panel of pro bono attorneys who provide over 2,500 hours of free legal assistance to our clients each year. LSC’s service model integrates substantive legal expertise with social work services to holistically meet clients’ needs. LSC works to build clients’ strengths, network of supports, and resiliency, so they can address trauma and continue their development on healthy, functional paths to adulthood. LSC fights to ensure youth have a voice when they interact with systems that are overstressed, under-resourced, or historically repressive and unjust—juvenile justice, child welfare, and U.S. immigration. Whatever the outcome of their legal case, youth become stronger and better able to self-advocate after working with LSC.
