Mission Statement

Bread for the World Institute provides nonpartisan policy research and analysis on hunger and strategies to end it. Using analysis, trends, and data, we develop policy solutions to inform Bread for the World’s advocacy and equip Bread staff and activists with the knowledge they need to take action on policy issues.

About This Cause

We envision a world where every person thrives, without missing several meals in a row or worrying where their next meal will come from. There is enough food for everyone in the world. What is needed is the collective will and action to get nutritious food to those who need it. While we rarely if ever see life-threatening hunger in the United States, our country still has far too many people who don’t always have access to enough nutritious food. Food pantries and charities are extremely important, but they cannot end hunger alone. The U.S. government provides nearly 10 times as much food assistance as all charities combined. Moreover, providing food is essential, but this cannot resolve the causes of hunger. Our research has contributed to efforts that have impacted 320 million Americans and more than 7 billion people around the world. We provide nonpartisan policy analysis and recommendations to help the 315,000 members of our sister organization Bread for the World be more effective in their advocacy to end hunger. Bread for the World’s advocacy has helped secure billions of dollars in humanitarian and development aid to enable people to produce, buy, or access nutritious food. Solving a complex problem such as hunger requires a clear understanding of the impact of specific policies and how policies affect each other. Our areas of focus include global and U.S. hunger and poverty; U.S. international development assistance; the global Sustainable Development Goals; communities most impacted by hunger; maternal and child nutrition; food security and smallholder agriculture; and climate change. Bread for the World Institute’s experience over the past 50 years shows us that if we invest in the right programs and policies, world-changing progress to end hunger is possible. We invite you to join us in ensuring this generation and those to come are able to provide food for themselves and their families.
