LIBERTY HILL FOUNDATION

LOS ANGELES, California, 90048-5547 United States

Mission Statement

Liberty Hill advances movements for social change through a strategic combination of grants, leadership training and alliance building. When Liberty Hill began in 1976, it was a daring new foundation that turned philanthropy on its head. Today it is a national leader in social justice. Organizing and advocacy powered by Liberty Hill has changed national policies, launched movements, transformed neighborhoods, and nurtured hundreds of community leaders who respond to the experience of injustice by fighting for their rights.

About This Cause

Established in 1976, Liberty Hill is a public foundation that is uniquely positioned to advance social justice by bringing key forces together to build a common agenda for equality and opportunity in Los Angeles County. Liberty Hill’s motto is “Change, not Charity.” Although important, charity is a temporary solution. Change, in contrast, involves problem solving through community organizing and advocacy for the long term. With a $4.6 million budget, Liberty Hill advances change by: (1) providing grants to community groups at the frontlines of change; (2) empowering grassroots leaders with core capacity-building and leadership development training; (3) promoting strategic and thoughtful social change philanthropy to build financial resources for this work; and (4) forging and leading diverse coalitions that serve the most vulnerable. Liberty Hill’s nearly 40 year focus on community organizing helped build the deep community relationships and trust necessary to identify, fund and help many organizations become effective agents of change in low-income, underserved and disenfranchised people of color communities where resources and support were limited. Since 1976, Liberty Hill has distributed more than $50 million to community-based organizations and strengthened their organizational capacity to influence policy change in Los Angeles County. Liberty Hill is a strong anchor organization—a key capacity-building partner to private foundations, institutions and policy makers, and a hub for social justice philanthropy in Southern California. In Los Angeles County we have a successful track record as a strategic partner within diverse sectors that influence advocacy, culture, health and human services. Each time Liberty Hill has convened key stakeholders around common issues to promote a solution which was beyond the ability of one single organization, the outcomes have been innovative, humane and thoughtful (e.g., The Human Service Network in 1996, our Green LA campaign in 2005 and our Brothers Sons Selves campaign in 2011, The Fund for environmental Health and Safety to address harmful effects of unconventional oil extraction in 2014 and the first-in-the nation Wage Theft fund in 2015 to ensure stolen wages from the most vulnerable workers in L.A. are returned).
