A kaleidoscopic tapestry of vocal hues …” — New York Times Since 1969, the internationally acclaimed vocal sextet The Western Wind has devoted itself to the special beauty and variety of a cappella music. The Ensemble’s repertoire reveals its diverse background – from Renaissance motets to Fifties rock ’n’ roll, from medieval carols to Duke Ellington, from complex works by avant-garde composers to the simplest folk melodies.

About This Cause

The Western Wind is dedicated to the art of vocal ensemble singing. Since 1969, it has presented a unique repertoire including Medieval and Renaissance music, early Baroque, early American, Romantic, and Judaica as well as folk, jazz and pop arrangements. The Western Wind also commissions works from living composers including William Bolcom, Bobby McFerrin, Meredith Monk, Charlie Morrow, Ron Gold, Philip Glass, Tania León, Robert Dennis, James Bassi, Michel Camilo, Lisa Bielawa, Eric Salzman, Elliot Z. Levine, Matthew Harris and others. The Western Wind accomplishes its purpose in the following ways: Concerts and music-theatre performances: A self-produced series in New York City. Appearances at concert and college venues throughout the United States and abroad Performances with orchestras and other performing organizations including the St. Louis Symphony the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, The Folger Consort, Parthenia and Hesperus. Arts In Education Programs for NYC public school students Intensive workshops in ensemble singing at Smith College and at other venues, which attract participants from all around the world. 1-Day workshops in the NY metropolitan area (and other locales) for avocational singers. Radio programs for public radio produced in collaboration with National Public Radio and Public Radio International Recordings on its own label and other labels including Nonesuch, Musical Heritage, Island, NPR and Labor Records. Publications of Western Wind repertoire with Transcontinental, Oxford University Press, Broude Bros, Shawnee Press and Shadowpress.
