Mission Statement

More than one-third of all Virginians rely on the James River and its tributaries for water, commerce and recreation. After generations of nurturing its people, the James River needs nurturing itself. Let the James River Association show you how to enjoy and protect this natural treasure.

About This Cause

The James River Association (JRA) is the only organization in Virginia working solely to protect and enhance the James River and the 15,000 miles of tributaries that flow throughout its 10,000 square mile watershed. Founded in 1976 by a group of citizens who were concerned about the health and future of the James River, JRA’s mission is to be the guardian of the James River, to provide a voice for the river and take action to promote conservation and responsible stewardship of its natural resources. To address water quality issues throughout the watershed the organization partners with corporations, local governments, farmers, landowners, individuals and state and national agencies. Through these partnerships JRA identifies root causes of pollution in the watershed and implements solutions to reduce or eliminate their negative impacts. Education and stewardship are at the heart of all JRA’s programs and working through its core programs, Education, Outreach, Watershed Restoration, River Advocacy and the Riverkeeper program, JRA provides education and volunteer opportunities for people of all ages to improve the quality of their local waterways for today and for future generations to enjoy. JRA is a member of EarthShare, a federation of the nation's finest environmental and conservation organizations.
