Mission Statement

Hopeful Solutions empowers homeless, single mothers who are overcoming the challenges of substance abuse with the resources needed to reduce the chance of relapse and increase the chance of self-sufficiency while living with their children.

About This Cause

Hopeful Solutions’ mission is to empower homeless single mothers overcoming the challenges of substance abuse achieve self-sufficiency while living with their children. The mothers referred to Hopeful Solutions are homeless women seeking long term recovery and an opportunity to rebuild their lives with their children. Many have been dual diagnosed with a mental disorder such as depression, or anxiety, in addition to the substance use disorder. Hopeful Solutions is one of the few places the mothers can go to receive long-term supportive services that address these conditions, while still being able to live their children. Without these services, the women and their children would most likely remain homeless, or they would return to prison or drug rehabilitation facilities; and their children would be removed from their custody and placed in the care of Child Protective Services or extended family members. Hopeful Solutions meets two community needs: reducing homelessness among women suffering with co-occurring mental disorders within Dallas County and alleviating child neglect among women with a substance use disorder. In working towards meeting these two critical needs, Hopeful Solutions coordinates its efforts with other local Dallas agencies in order to provide a continuum of care. Since operations began in the fall of 2008, Hopeful Solutions has been able to serve 82 mothers and 125 children (unduplicated), providing housing and supportive services with very favorable results. The profile of the mothers is as follows: average age of 29; over 50% have felony convictions, mostly related to substance abuse disorder; over 50% have been dual diagnosed and are being treated for mental illness. Few of the mothers have ever had a place of their own; most have been in institutions, lived with family members or with abusive partners. Few have high school diplomas or jobs, and many have been subjected to domestic violence or sexual abuse. The symptoms of substance abuse disorder have caused the children to be victims of neglect and removed from the custody of their mothers. The families of Hopeful Solutions are provided housing for 18 to 24 months through our partnership with Dallas Housing Authority’s Project Based Voucher Program. The success of our services is based on the Mothers’ participation in our Jump Start, New Directions and Out and About programs. The Jump Start Program, helps the Mothers transition from homelessness and group living to independent life in their own apartments; the New Directions Program, teaches the skills necessary for the Mothers to achieve self-sufficiency and care for their children; and the Out and About program provides many opportunities for family bonding. Our Mothers and their children participate in cultural activities and social events that help to rebuild relationships that were affected during active drug/alcohol use. The focus of these programs is to help the mothers make the transition from a group residential substance abuse treatment facility to independent living with their children. For the first 90 days we provide intense supportive services in the areas of case management, counseling, recovery support, mental and physical health, life skills, parenting and overall social well-being. This is a vital phase in their process of recovery because it is at this point the mothers and their children address the mental issues that have disrupted their lives. Housing is the first priority for our mothers and their children to begin the recovery process and our programs helps them to establish a stable foundation to rebuild their lives. Through our case management the mothers are connected to community resources that will assist them with child care, financial stability, counseling, job readiness, and educational development. Our case managers also help the mothers develop a Plan of Action that addresses their mental health, time management, financial strategies, and goal setting and relapse prevention. We have collaborations with many community agencies to assist us with providing necessary resources for the mothers and their children.
