Mission Statement

Longacre Lea is a small, professional theatre company specializing in using a physical performance style to enliven heady and demanding texts. The company prioritizes creating theatre with local artists while also respecting both environmental and market sustainability.

About This Cause

Longacre Lea was established in 1998 at a time when there was virtually no live professional theater in the D.C. area in August. The company launched itself with classic absurdism and with unusual interpretations of classical texts. As the number of producing theaters in the area has more than tripled since then, Longacre Lea has adhered to a one-show season in order not to overstrain resources or contribute to an over-saturated and undisciplined market. Every summer the company gathers mainly local artists ("an enviable ensemble" -- Washington City Paper), and creates an evening of thought provoking and vigorous storytelling (Artistic Director Kathleen Akerley is "one of D.C.’s most unapologetically thinky theatermakers, bur[ying] highbrow Easter eggs like a code geek working on a flashy new iPhone app" -- Washington City Paper). The company is committed to set designs with as little lumber as possible, and in 2009 eliminated paper programs and replaced them with a lobby display. We are also committed to paying competitive stipends to our artists (or Equity wage, where applicable), while keeping our ticket prices at $20 or less. Longacre Lea has always taken a down-to-earth approach to its endeavors, with no ambition to grow for its own sake and an Artistic Director who takes great pleasure in making herself available after every performance for audience members who want to engage about the work -- which they do, we're very fortunate in our audience. Recently, the company's staff has prioritized taking a harder look at our role in the community: to understand it, and view the time of the community/audience members as another resource that should not be wasted; to find out how to make our stories immediate and, as far as possible, relevant. Our 2016 show examined the relationship of artist to audience and artists to donors, and gave us data for this inquiry. The upcoming show [this description is being written in May 2017] will be our most politically timely, mashing up the NFL and HAMLET to create a darkly comic absurdist exploration of race, class, and gender in Trump's America. We welcome any questions about what we do, and appreciate our supporters very much.
