About This Cause

Songea’s Kids is a grassroots, all- volunteer nonprofit organization based in the Seattle area of Washington State with an international working Board of Directors. We work to build hope and transform lives of orphans, vulnerable children and their communities. We have two programs to achieve our goals. Our Child Sponsorship Program pairs individual sponsors with a child in urgent need, making it possible for the child to live in foster care arrangements, primarily with extended family. We currently support 152 children in the program, ranging from pre-school through university. Our sponsors provide the food, clothing, health care and education funding that make it possible for poor families to take in and care for the children. Our goal is that when these kids graduate from our program, they have the knowledge, skills and ability to become self-supporting. To date, the impact of this program is: 5 university graduates, 6 college graduates and 44 vocational training school graduates. Our second program is to build Hope Village, a vibrant community that will care for orphans and abandoned children who do not have options for foster care. The program will serve 190 orphans, living in residential homes with nurturing matrons, in the midst of a vibrant community with onsite health care, education, and training facilities, and small enterprises that provide income and additional nutrition. We have partnered with Hope Village Organization, a Tanzanian NGO, local government officials, village organizations, and international partnerships to build a village that will provide a special community for orphans. To date, we have: • Provided solar pumped water and solar electricity infrastructure • Constructed two of 13 planned orphan residences • Constructed and opened a health care facility that serves 1600 local villagers annually • Opened the first dental clinic in the region • Constructed a vocational training center for certification in masonry & tailoring • Launched enterprises in chicken farming, food crop production, beekeeping Puget Sound area architects and engineers designed buildings and engineering needs pro bono—buildings utilize locally available materials and the site makes use of green technology including high-capacity solar-powered wells, solar lighting, more nutritious crops, waste water recycling. We partner with local government, NGOs and businesses to build partnerships that add value. We provide training and employment for local villagers to help with the construction of Hope Village, creating opportunities for skills development. Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty, one child and one community at a time by providing nurturing homes, clean water, nutritious food, quality education and training, and small enterprise development opportunities.
