Mission Statement
The Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art preserves and presents elements of art and nature that highlight the extraordinary beauty of the Brandywine region in Pennsylvania and Delaware.
About This Cause
The Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art is committed to the belief that preservation and wise use of natural and cultural resources provides health, education, beauty, and increased quality of life for individuals and communities. The Conservancy assures present and future generations of open space, dependable water supplies, historical sites, and important works of American Art, and also provides an understanding of the meaning and potential of these things, both separately and in relation to each other. The Brandywine River Museum of Art in addition to building and exhibiting an important collection has prepared and presented 277 special exhibitions since 1971 and written and published 92 scholarly exhibition catalogues, including its comprehensive Catalogue of the Collection. In 2008 the two-volume, N. C. Wyeth, Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings was published. The Museum’s American art collections focus primarily on illustration, still life and landscape painting, and the art and artists of the Brandywine region. Mrs. Andrew Wyeth lends her extraordinary personal art collection here, as well. The library collections include 3,635 illustrated books; 5,293 auction, collection, and exhibition catalogues; 4,628 archived periodicals: and 2,163 reference volumes. Supplementing its art collections, the Museum also owns the N.C. Wyeth house and studio, and Kuerner farm (the site of many hundreds of works of art by Andrew Wyeth.) Public tours of these national historic landmarks are available April through November. In 2010, Brandywine took ownership of Andrew Wyeth’s studio and surrounding property. After renovation of the structure and conservation of objects within, the studio opened to the public in 2012.
