Mission Statement
The Mission of the Greater Baltimore Urban League movement is to enable African Americans and other minorities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.
About This Cause
The Greater Baltimore Urban League – Since 1924, we have been helping disadvantaged Marylanders gain access to equal opportunity in employment, education, health care, housing and the civic arena. We encourage you to join the GBUL and take advantage of the many opportunities available to improve the quality of life for you and your community. The Greater Baltimore Urban League, Inc. (GBUL) is one of the local affiliates of the National Urban League– a nonprofit, nonpartisan, multi-ethnic, social service organization. Through direct service delivery, advocacy, referrals, community capacity building, information dissemination and technical assistance, the League accomplishes its mission to improve social and economic conditions and opportunities for African-Americans and other people who face barriers to full participation in American society. Our Legacy and Reach The National Urban League, founded in 1910 is the nation’s oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. With its broad scope of issues and approaches, GBUL is a dominant force for equal opportunity in Maryland. It was founded in 1924 by Rev. Peter Ainslie, Baltimore clergyman; John R. Cary, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Provident Savings Bank; and Dr. Charles S. Johnson, Research Director for the National Urban League and President of Fisk University. For 94 years, GBUL led multiple efforts to open opportunities and integrate institutions, including the Baltimore City Fire Department, the University of Maryland, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, the Baltimore Medical Society, and the Baltimore Emergency Relief Commission. GBUL publishes the annual State of Black Baltimore documenting social conditions in Baltimore and sits on the board of the Baltimore Education Research Consortium (BERC), the Maryland working group of ESSA Leadership Learning Community (ELLC) and the Maryland Coalition for Equity. During times of crisis, GBUL, known as the voice of reason, convenes key stakeholders across sectors and acts to calm the waters, a role most recently played in the aftermath of Freddie Gray’s death. In addition to our role in policy and advocacy, the CEO currently sits on the boards of Greater Baltimore Committee, Central Maryland Transportation Alliance, and Baltimore Convention and Tourism. Our Programs Complementing its advocacy, convening, and social research, GBUL operates wide-ranging programs that consistently achieve their collective goal to remove barriers and foster success serving the Greater Baltimore Region. All programs are offered at no cost. • Youth – The Youth Empowerment Program consists of the Saturday Leadership Program, a college and career readiness program with a 89% college going rate and Youthworks summer programs. • Entrepreneurship – Within its first six months, the Raymond V. Haysbert, Sr. Center for Entrepreneurship served 350 aspiring or growing entrepreneurs with introductory workshops, in-depth seminars or one-on-one consultation appointments creating or saving 29 jobs and $347,000 in contracts or non-debt infusion.
