Mission Statement

Founded in 1864, Good Shepherd Services (GSS) provides clinical and educational services to at-risk, disadvantaged and underserved girls and boys ages 13 to 21 who are experiencing serious emotional and psychiatric disorders. The Good Shepherd mission is “Love-In-Action” and rests on the belief that “One person is more precious than a world.” The Good Shepherd vision is to create a safe environment based on respect and caring which empowers youth to reach their maximum potential for wholeness while promoting an understanding of moral and ethical values. Good Shepherd Services’ goal is to help each adolescent grow to his or her potential in work or school and transition successfully back into their community. We are firmly dedicated to the belief that no matter how severe the symptoms, all children can be reached and succeed in having productive lives.

About This Cause

With an ongoing population of 75 girls and boys, Good Shepherd Services is the largest residential treatment center for adolescent girls and boys in the state of Maryland. In FY2014, our organization served 161 youth who comes from all counties in Maryland as well as the District of Columbia. Good Shepherd has an excellent reputation of service to our youth and we wrap these services around each resident, combining treatment, residential, educational and vocational services so that an adolescent has a holistic highly structured, consistent learning and living environment supporting his or her therapeutic program. Good Shepherd Services provides our residents with the following programs: • Good Shepherd Services’ Residential Program provides a therapeutic setting where each child is assigned to one of our seven group residential milieus. Each milieu has a multidisciplinary team consisting of a psychiatrist, clinical milieu manager, residential coordinator and aides, teacher, therapist and nurse. • Good Shepherd’s Activities Program offers a wide variety of social, recreational, cultural and therapeutic activities both on-site and in the larger community after school and on weekends. • In our Clinical Services Program, therapists conduct individual as well as family therapy sessions for the residents. Psychological and psychiatric services, including psychological and educational testing, are available whenever the need is determined. • The Good Shepherd School is a special and general education school for students in grades 6-12 or ages 12¬-21. We are fully approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Our class size averages six to nine students, and our staff is trained to meet the special learning and behavioral needs of students enrolled in Good Shepherd School. • The School for Exceptional Students (SES) program was opened in the fall of 2012 as a separate learning environment to address the needs of specific neurodevelopmentally challenged students. Included under the single certification of our main school, the SES program meets staffing, academic and regulatory requirements as well as all other MSDE mandates. Both learning environments are under a single Director of Education. • The Family Advocacy Program works with our students’ families to encourage daily family contact through visiting and phone calls, attendance at weekly meetings with therapists, and involvement in a variety of planned family activities occurring at least two or three times a month. All services at Good Shepherd Services are designed to cultivate a sense of achievement, to encourage self-determination, problem solving, decision-making, a sense of responsibility and service, the strengthening of interpersonal and family relationships, and to promote an understanding of moral and ethical values. Good Shepherd Services often admits children with such difficult issues that no other Maryland program will take them, thus helping children remain in their home state for treatment. Despite this, Good Shepherd Services has a high success rate and maintains a firm commitment to never eject students from the program. Good Shepherd Services is dedicated to healing the youth we serve and transitioning them successfully back into the community.
