A) Out of school time programs are delivered in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel County & Baltimore County Title I schools, within social service agencies, public libraries & recreation centers. There are 3 types of programs offered by GSCM through Out-of-School time programs: (1) Providing academic information which includes: (a) a reading literacy program – with content on self-awareness, diversity, friendship & courage. (b) STEM- Topics utilize age-appropriate curriculum designed by Techbridge & GSUSA & are delivered through an experiential learning methodology. A financial literacy program is offered to grades 6 through 12 that covers budgeting, money-saving, entrepreneurship & career exploration. (2) Building self-confidence, instilling problem solving abilities & social skills through discussion of relevant topics & practice (role playing) to address such issues as conflict resolution & resisting peer pressure. (3)physical health & wellness. This program is focused on developing healthy eating/food preparation habits & instilling a commitment to good health through exercise & physical activity. B) Camp: Girl Scouts of Central Maryland offers a resident and five day camps programs for girls ages 6-17. GSCM’s resident camp program located in a Cecil County MD is ACA accredited. GSCM offers a summer day camp program for girls entering grades 1-12 for underserved girls. The camp offers archery, rock-wall climbing, financial literacy and STEM programs leveraging community partnerships with organizations like NASA Goddard Space Science Center. C) Troops: GSCM offers the core Girl Scout program including earning skill building badges while also offering a vibrant troop program. Programs are delivered by almost 9,000 adults who are trained. GSCM provides troop formation & troop management support. Troops are volunteer led. Ambassador Level Girls are guided to complete impactful service-learning projects to earn a Gold Award- the highest level of Girl Scouts. The Gold Award is nationally recognized and opens opportunities for young women with such benefits as national scholarships and being able to enter the military at a higher rank. The entrepreneurship program & Cookie sale are implemented through the Troops. D) Beyond Bars: The first Beyond Bars program in the country was funded by the National Institute of Justice & developed & implemented in 1992 by the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. The goal of this program is to lessen the impact of separation & stigma associated with parental incarceration by 1) structured prison visits; 2) combining activities that build trust & facilitate communication through private bonding time; & 3) supporting healthy mother-daughter interactions. It allows mothers who are incarcerated & their daughters to be involved in each other’s lives through bi-weekly troop meetings & one overnight stay per year at the Maryland Correctional Institute for Women. GSCM equips girls with strong ethics, sound decision-making capabilities & increased self-esteem so they can effectively deal with personal & social issues they face. E) Workforce Development: GSCM has partnered with the Baltimore City YouthWorks program, offering summer employment to disadvantaged youth. GSCM also provides on-the-job training, job readiness skills and career exploration opportunities for a variety of bright outlook jobs. Mentorship is provided in STEM fields, and hands-on paid experience and training is provided for clerical, customer service, retail operations and youth-camp operation positions.
