Mission Statement

Drawing on the unique resources of the nation’s capital and our long history, the JASWDC promotes friendship and understanding between Americans and Japanese through diverse programming that spans the educational, cultural, business, and policy spheres.

About This Cause

JASWDC is a membership organization that serves as the anchor of U.S.-Japan cultural exchange in Washington, D.C. Since our founding in 1957 by MOFA and State Department diplomats, we have worked to build and sustain U.S.-Japan grassroots ties in support of the broader bilateral relationship. Our non-partisan, nonprofit (501c3) organization convenes hundreds of events and classes each year in support of this goal. We are proud to be the organization that hosts the annual Sakura Matsuri-Japanese Street Festival—that largest one-day celebration of Japanese culture in the United States, attracting over 30,000 attendees each year. We are also proud to be the home of the National Japan Bowl—a high school-level Japanese language and culture competition that draws over 200 of the top Japanese language students from around the country. JASWDC’s Japanese Language School is the region’s largest; enrolling approximately 200 students per semester. Our celebrated US-Japan Capital Gala each November serves as the Washington, D.C. policy community’s preeminent celebration of the U.S.-Japan bilateral relationship and regularly attracts members of Congress, executive agency officials, state governors, sports celebrities, and other notable community members.
