Mission Statement

AARP Foundation is working to win back opportunity for struggling Americans 50+ by being a force for change on the most serious issues they face today: housing, hunger, income and isolation. By coordinating responses to these issues on all four fronts at once, and supporting them with vigorous legal advocacy, the Foundation serves the unique needs of those 50+ while working with local organizations nationwide to reach more people, strengthen communities, work more efficiently and make resources go further. AARP Foundation is AARP’s affiliated charity.

About This Cause

For an alarming number of adults in the United States 50 and over, any opportunity today feels distant, if not unattainable. AARP Foundation is working with struggling individuals 50+ to win back opportunity, so they can take control, move from vulnerability to stability and regain their confidence as good providers and community members. AARP Foundation offers services, legal advocacy and grants to struggling adults 50+ and the nonprofit organizations that serve them. When faced with circumstances beyond their control, they need an opportunity to regroup. That way, they can go back to being a source of help and hope for others. AARP Foundation is here to help those 50+ adults in need stay ahead of their bills, hold on to their homes and keep food on the table. We connect them to help they may not have known was out there. We work with them to cut through red tape and navigate bureaucracies to get the benefits they deserve. We help them become good providers again, and a resource for all those who depend on them. For example: AARP Foundation Litigation advocates for the rights of adults 50+ in courts nationwide, representing their interests on state and federal laws about age discrimination, consumer and financial fraud, employee benefits, investor protection, health and long-term care, housing and benefits for struggling people 50+. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide’s 35,000 volunteers give free state and federal tax preparation help to 2.6 million people 50+ in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. AARP Foundation SCSEP (Senior Community Service and Employment Program) is its second-largest and most successful sponsor. SCSEP is the only program in the U.S. that provides community services and work-based training to unemployed, vulnerable people 55+. AARP Foundation funds community nonprofit organizations through its Office of Grants Administration, offering Hunger Impact and Recession Relief grants. Through Drive to End Hunger, AARP Foundation is raising awareness -- and funds – nationwide about hunger among the 50+ population. AARP Foundation BACK TO WORK 50+ connects unemployed older adults to services and resources to help them gain access to in-demand jobs. In 2014 BACK TO WORK 50+ expanded by partnering with community colleges around the country to help administer the program. AARP Foundation’s Housing Solutions Center helps at-risk homeowners avoid foreclosure by providing free counseling sessions with HUD-certified counselors. AARP Foundation launched Mentor Up in 2013 to provide opportunities for young people to help 50+ adults through community service programs and by pursuing reverse mentoring, sharing their technological skills and knowledge to help older adults stay connected and up to date. We work side by side with these organizations across the nation. That way, we can reach more people and make resources go further. Think of us as a powerful multiplier effect for much-needed programs and services. We offer our support to programs that are already doing their job well. We help them work more effectively, or on a broader scale. As a result, we can reach more communities across the country and more people can win back opportunity, take control and help others.
