The Urban Institute’s mission is to open minds, shape decisions, and offer practical solutions to the nation’s social and economic policy challenges through evidence-based research and objective analyses. We believe that decisions shaped by facts, rather than ideology, have the power to improve public policy and practice, strengthen communities, and transform people’s lives for the better.
About This Cause
The Urban Institute is the nation’s leading organization dedicated to helping expand opportunities for all, reducing hardship for the most vulnerable populations, and strengthening the effectiveness of the public, private, and social impact sectors. Since its founding in 1968, Urban has embraced a mission that has not strayed from our roots in advancing policies and practices designed to lift people out of poverty and narrow the inequities holding back entire communities. Recently, in honor of Urban’s 50-year legacy, we embarked on a forward-looking exploratory process that clarified our vision for how we could best support those driving change across society in the decades ahead. Through this “Next50” process, we recommitted ourselves to bringing the power of knowledge to help today’s leaders advance upward mobility, equity, and shared prosperity. We will do so by ensuring that the insights we deliver capture and confront structural racism and reflect and embrace a changing America.
