YWCA National Capital Area's mission is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Our bold goal is to ensure that women and girls of color in high-need communities have the resources and support needed to achieve personal, educational and professional success.
About This Cause
YWCA National Capital Area's mission is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Our bold goal is to ensure that women and girls of color in high-need communities have the resources and support needed to achieve personal, educational and professional success. The YWCA’s Adult Education Program serves more than 300 low-income adults, primarily women, annually by providing year-round adult basic education and GED preparation, tutoring, mentoring, career education, workforce readiness programming, job placement assistance; academic, life skills and self-esteem building; and by promoting self-advocacy. We provide comprehensive wrap-around services, and a growing number of employer partnerships to facilitate job placements. Our graduates become competitive applicants for high demand, living-wage jobs in such fields as customer service, hotel and hospitality, health care, and IT, which support and strengthen them, their families, and the DC community. Our youth development program for middle-school girls builds academic skills, provides college preparation, introduces STEM/STEAM careers, and teaches them about healthy relationships, leadership development and social justice issues. The YWCA supports affordable health care for women and families, the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the racial justice agenda, and the prevention of violence against women.
