Mission Statement

We work with families to identify and solve the unique challenges of military life through advocacy and programs that strengthen their financial security, well-being, and future.

About This Cause

For 55 years, NMFA has stood beside military families, including spouses, children, and teens, through every challenge of military life. We advocate on Capitol Hill for better policies and deliver programs that provide direct support, helping families build financial security, resilience, and opportunities for the future: Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship Program: By the end of 2025, we will celebrate our 10,000th scholarship recipient and surpass $10 million awarded to help military spouses earn degrees, licenses, and certifications—strengthening careers and family financial security. Operation Purple® Camp: Since 2004, more than 70,000 military kids have enjoyed a free week of camp where they connect with peers, build resilience, and take a break from the stress of military life. Operation Purple® Summer Challenge: A virtual program reaching families nationwide, bringing camp-style fun and skill-building to communities with the greatest financial stress. In 2025, 1,330 families and 2,622 kids participated, engaging in activities that helped them build resilience, confidence, and a sense of community even from a distance. Military Teen Leadership Programs: Empowering teens with mentorship and training to build confidence and leadership skills, impacting thousands of military youth each year. Together, these programs, alongside our advocacy, help millions of military families build stability, strengthen well-being, and thrive in the face of service-related challenges.
