About This Cause

About the National Black Child Development Institute For 48 years, the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) has been committed to our mission to improve and advance the quality of life for Black children and families through education and advocacy. With our National Affiliate Network, we develop and deliver strengths-based, culturally-relevant, evidence-based, and trauma-informed curricula and programs that focus on health and wellness, family engagement, and literacy. We support increased access to effective education by providing professional development scholarships for early childhood educators. NBCDI, the National Affiliate Network, and our members advocate and inform education policies at the federal, state, and local levels to ensure standards, regulations, and resource allocations support equitable systems for Black children and families. NBCDI Affiliate Network NBCDI's twenty-six Affiliates, bolstered by thousands of members, are the heart of the organization, engaging in successful program and policy work by reaching deep into Black communities in cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Greensboro, Jackson, Fort Lauderdale, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and Sacramento. To support them as they strengthen their capacity and engage in effective programming, we provide financial resources, professional development and technical assistance from our national office, located in Washington, DC through a combination of ongoing in-person and electronic communications. Through NBCDI’s Action Agenda, publications, curriculum, programs, and unique products, the National Black Child Development Institute is changing Black families and the narrative surrounding Black children. • Developed by NBCDI, the Read to Succeed program is designed to promote early literacy and language development by providing families with children between birth and eight years old with culturally responsive, developmentally appropriate children's books and supplementary resources to establish in-home libraries. • Since October 2010, NBCDI has coordinated and distributed over 800 comprehensive higher education scholarships to teachers working in early care and education throughout the District of Columbia through the evidence-based, nationally-recognized T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood program. • NBCDI developed an initiative to promote culturally-relevant healthy nutrition practices among Black children and families with young children. Since 2011, NBCDI has reached over 51,000 individuals, including children, parents, and educators through the implementation of the Good for Me! Preschool curriculum and Grow Green Get Fit curriculum for school age children. The program includes classroom implementation in addition to family and community engagement activities to promote healthy eating and physical activity. • NBCDI is a contributing and valued member of several early childhood coalitions at the national level, working closely with a range of partners and policymakers to advocate for positive, supportive and equitable funding and policy decisions that affect Black children, families and communities. • Known for our beautiful annual Calendar of Children, NBCDI produces a wide range of print and online materials, resources and recommendations to support parents, professionals and policymakers. • NBCDI's Annual Conference is a significant and special draw for hundreds of parents, educators and leaders dedicating to supporting Black children and families, who gathered from all across the country for the 48th time in Dallas, Texas in October 2018. • In 2013, NBCDI released a ground-breaking national report titled Being Black Is Not a Risk Factor: A Strengths-Based Look at the State of the Black Child designed to challenge the prevailing discourse about Black children-one which over-emphasizes limitations and deficits and does not draw upon the considerable strengths, assets and resilience demonstrated by our children, families and communities. In 2014, NBCDI released two state based reports for Michigan and Wisconsin, followed by reports for Illinois and Pennsylvania in 2015 and Florida in 2016. We are deeply grateful for support from the Alliance for Early Success, as well as our data partners, including CLASP and NCCP, and, of course, our Affiliate network and partners on the ground in the states.
