Mission Statement
The mission of Special Olympics D.C. is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
About This Cause
The vision statement for Special Olympics D.C. is to become the model Special Olympics urban program in the world, serving children and adults with intellectual disabilities with the best opportunities through sports, health initiatives, education, inclusion, and community engagement. Special Olympics D.C. is the sole provider of sports training, competition, and fitness programs for children and adults with intellectual or closely related developmental disabilities in the District of Columbia. 12 sports programs are conducted throughout the year including the following: basketball, bocce, bowling, golf, soccer, speed skating, tennis, track and field, volleyball, Unified Sports, Young Athletes, and Motor Activities Training Program. 2,500 children and adults with intellectual disabilities are currently being served in the District. All services -- sports, health and wellness, life skill development -- have been and always will be provided for free. These programs are essential to the citizens with intellectual disabilities residing in the District of Columbia. Special Olympics D.C. is committed to helping its participants lead healthy lives, succeed in school, acquire employment skills, and become self-advocates. Special Olympics D.C. was established in 1969 and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. There is a full-time staff of six led by the President and CEO, Nicole Preston.
