Mission Statement
Midtown Youth Academy (MYA) aims to provide youth in Washington DC, especially underserved minorities, with the tools for success through education and wellness through boxing.
About This Cause
Midtown Youth Academy (MYA) has been a safe haven for thousands of underserved youth for more than 45 years, promoting success through education and wellness through boxing. MYA was founded in 1977 by Eugene R. Hughes, a boxing trainer and drug abuse counselor, who was acutely aware of the conditions that often led youth of the District of Columbia to become involved in drug addiction and crime. As the first co-located boxing and educational program in the District, many youth were drawn to MYA. They come from group homes, misguided homes and even no home; uncared for, unloved and under-respected. Through MYA, Mr. Hughes provided boxing lessons that also serve as an engagement tool for minority youth, especially boys, for after-school and summer programs that also provide tutoring and education in test preparation, and training and experience in technology, arts, and entrepreneurship. MYA was located at 2206 14th Street NW for over 30 years and has recently found a new home at 5332 Georgia Avenue NW, where it is a neighbor to four times the number of youth. We are gradually rebuilding our programs to suit the new location and new generation of youth.
