Mission Statement
Midtown Youth Academy promotes success through education and wellness through boxing to underserved minority youths in Washington, DC.
About This Cause
Midtown Youth Academy (MYA) has been a safe haven for thousands of underserved youths for more than 47 years, promoting success through education and wellness through boxing. MYA was founded in 1977 by Eugene R. Hughes, a boxing trainer and drug abuse counselor, who was acutely aware of the conditions that often led youth of the District of Columbia to become involved in drug addiction and crime. As the first co-located boxing and educational program in the District, many youths were drawn to MYA. They've come from group homes, misguided homes and even no home; uncared for, unloved and under-respected. MYA integrates resilience and violence prevention into the boxing lessons, after-school and during the summer. Additionally, youths are provided tutoring, and training and experience in technology, arts, and entrepreneurship.
