Mission Statement

The Clara Barton Center for Children is established to facilitate learning through play by providing a varied, developmentally appropriate program that nurtures creativity and exploration and fosters children’s social development. We value … • a curriculum that emerges from the needs and interests of children and teachers; • staff that practice effective early childhood strategies and best practices that reflect the latest research for supporting the development of young children • parents as partners in documenting children’s learning; • diversity in cultural background, learning styles, abilities and expressed opinions; • a sense of community in the classroom, in the staff room, and in our neighborhood; • active participation of staff and parents in center-wide decisions; • continuity and stability in relationships between children and their teachers; • openness and directness in interpersonal relations at every level of the organization; and • respect for the environment inside and outside the classroom. In order to accomplish this Mission, the Clara Barton Center for Children operates according to the following principles: • To provide quality, comprehensive and child-centered learning environments and child care services for children from two to five years of age. • To invite all children to participate in our child care program and intentionally plan for ways to help each and every child be successful, regardless of his or her ability levels and needs. • To foster each child’s social development by encouraging interaction with peers and adults, establishing and enforcing limits, encouraging self-expression in a manner that demonstrates respect for others, and by helping the child learn to regulate his or her own behavior. • To recruit and retain qualified, nurturing teachers through competitive compensation, support of their professional development, and enhanced staff training opportunities. • To provide parents a variety of options and choices in program offerings to meet a wide range of child care needs. • To involve parents in the decision-making processes and the programs of the Clara Barton Center for Children by encouraging and supporting their participation on the Board of Directors and center-wide functions as well as classroom activities. • To assure the affordability of the center’s programs to all families by providing financial assistance to those who qualify.

About This Cause

The Clara Barton Center for Children (“CBCC”) provides a warm, friendly, and safe environment where children can play and learn. At CBCC, we believe that each child is special and has an infinite capacity for growth. We also believe that a wonderful cycle of learning is driven by the pleasure in play. All learning – emotional, social, motor and cognitive – is accelerated and facilitated by repetition fueled by the pleasure of play. Strong and recent research supports the value of play on children’s self-regulation, language and literacy skills, positive social behavior, positive approaches to learning, and math skills. (Copple, C., & Bredekamp, S. (Eds.), 2009. Developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood programs (3rd ed.). Washington, DC: National Association for the Education of Young Children.) At CBCC, children find joy in their work, excitement in learning, pleasure in friendships, and good feelings about themselves. Learning through play includes being curious, being flexible, handling differences, and thinking creatively. We provide a language-rich, socially nurturing environment in which children are encouraged to take risks, solve problems, and gain trust and confidence in their own abilities. Language is the ability to listen to, understand, and use words. Language learning is complex. It involves learning about the structure and sequence of speech sounds, vocabulary, grammar, and the rules for engaging in appropriate and effective conversation. Language learning begins at birth, and we know that strong language skills are essential for children’s success in school and life as children use language to think and to solve problems. (Jalongo, M.R., 2008. Learning to listen, listening to learn: Building essential skills in young children. Washington, DC: National Association for the Education of Young Children.) A very important part of our job is to help children develop strong language skills. Teachers influence language development through the language they use, the way they set up the environment, and the types of experiences they provide, including opportunities for socio-dramatic play that involves increased language use and more complex language structures. At CBCC we believe a large part of our job is to assist children with their evolving social and emotional development. We want children to gain competency in such skills as eating, dressing, and cleaning up after themselves, believing that competency in these areas enhances the child’s ability to regulate his or her own behavior. For young children, social-emotional development involves learning how to understand their own and others’ feelings, regulate and express their emotions appropriately, build relationships with others, and interact in groups. We believe the experience of being part of a group fosters the development of meaningful social relationships with other children and adults. Children can learn to share, take turns, respect individual differences, and enjoy working together. We believe that parents and/or the primary adults in a child’s life are the child’s first and most important teachers. CBCC encourages family engagement, which we view as a family-centered and strengths-based approach to making decisions, setting goals, and achieving desired outcomes for children and families. Engagement in the entire program enables parents and teachers to work together to support and improve the learning, development, and health of children. In addition, CBCC encourages family involvement and attributes a significant part of its program's success to the enthusiastic participation and support of its families. Involvement in the program enables families to become familiar with the teachers, staff and classroom friends, as well as with other families in our center and community. At CBCC we value our teachers as our greatest asset. They provide a nurturing and stimulating environment for our children. We are committed to having teachers who use best practices that reflect the latest research for supporting the development of young children in order to provide a developmental approach that emphasizes age-appropriate, unique, hands-on experiences for children. We encourage creativity and leadership among our teachers. Our teachers encourage engaged and rich play because their teaching is purposeful, meaningful, includes different settings, and encompasses a variety of teaching strategies, encompassing best practices. CBCC is committed to meeting the needs of the community for high-quality, flexible childcare. We offer a variety of program and schedule options that meet the demands of today’s working families. We believe that parents need choices of full day, part day with extended hours, as well as morning-only options to meet their work schedules. The Clara Barton Center for Children welcomes diversity and individuals of all abilities. CBCC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin or disability in the admission of students, the employment of faculty and administration, or in the administration of its programs. CBCC is committed to fostering and maintaining diversity in the socio-economic make-up of its student body. This commitment is reflected in the Center’s admission policies and its financial aid program for families in need.
