Mission Statement
The mission of Bread for the City is to provide vulnerable residents of Washington, DC with comprehensive services, including food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services, in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. We recognize that all people share a common humanity, and that all are responsible to themselves and to society as a whole. Therefore, we promote the mutual collaboration of clients, volunteers, donors, staff, and other community partners to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and to rectify the conditions that perpetuate it.
About This Cause
Bread for the City provides comprehensive direct services to residents of Washington, DC living with low-incomes. Our 112 staff and 1,500 volunteers help over 33,000 people annually through the following programs: Food: We feed 8,500 people each month at our two food pantry locations. Clothing: 1,000 people each month visit our Clothing Room to get professional and casual clothing at no charge. Medical: Our four staff providers see 2,600 patients each year and provide quality primary care, dental care, ophthalmology, and behavioral healthcare. Legal: Our attorneys offer advice and full representation in the areas of housing, family, and disability/public benefits law to 5,000 people annually. Social Services: Case managers see over 20,000 visits each year and help clients to find housing, employment, and simple stability. Advocacy: Our team of community organizers works with clients to fight for fair policies and address community needs. We provide all of these services at our two Centers in Southeast and Northwest DC, in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
