Mission Statement
The Rural Coalition/Coalición Rural is an alliance of farmers, farmworkers, indigenous, migrant, and working people from the United States, Mexico, Canada, and beyond working together toward a new society that values unity, hope, people, and land.
About This Cause
Rural Coalition/Coalición Rural is one of the most grassroots-oriented and culturally-diverse of rural organizations. With over 50 grassroots member organizations we serve as a critical advocacy voice of African-American, American-Indian, Asian-American, Euro-American, Latino, and women farmers, ranchers, farmworkers, and rural communities throughout the U.S. Through our shared efforts, we were able to secure more than 40 sections of policies in the 1990 - 2018 Farm Bills that provide a seat at the table in agriculture for the producers, farmworkers, and communities we serve. We are currently working to make the 2024 Farm Bill more fair for small producers and workers. In the past year, with our organizational members, we have helped hundreds of farmers and ranchers apply for IRA 22007 Discrimination Financial Assistance, and hundreds of workers apply for $600 Food and Farm Worker relief payments to reimburse them for pandemic costs. Through these and other programs, we are helping to sustain our member groups and assure they can retain the trained staff who are the critical link to help small scale producers access online platforms and do business online, to access federal benefits. These programs also help groups build community gardens and help farmers access new markets for the healthy fresh food they producers. We are committed to racial justice and in assuring the health of front line communities in the food system is protected. Together we seek to build a more just and sustainable food system which brings fair returns to minority and other small farmers and rural communities, establishes just and fair working conditions for farmworkers, protects the environment, and brings safe and healthy food to all consumers.
