About This Cause

Services to Abused Families, Inc. (SAFE) is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization based in rural Virginia that provides comprehensive, trauma-informed services to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. Established in 1980, SAFE has grown from a grassroots crisis line into a multi-faceted agency offering a full continuum of support, prevention, and advocacy services across a six-county region. Our Mission SAFE’s mission is to break the cycle of violence through crisis intervention, advocacy, education, and community collaboration. We are committed to creating a world where everyone has the right to feel safe, respected, and empowered. What We Do We believe safety is a human right—and no one should have to choose between staying in a dangerous situation or becoming homeless. To that end, SAFE offers: 24/7 Crisis Hotline – Confidential, compassionate support available 365 days a year. Emergency Shelter – Two fully staffed shelters offering a safe, healing space for up to 35 individuals at a time. Pet Shelter – Recognizing the importance of the human-animal bond, SAFE is one of only four domestic violence shelters in Virginia that welcomes survivors’ pets. Advocacy & Case Management – Safety planning, referrals, and individualized support to help clients rebuild their lives. Court & Legal Advocacy – Help navigating protective orders, custody, immigration issues, and other civil/legal processes. Hospital Accompaniment – Advocates provide in-person support for survivors undergoing forensic exams following sexual assault. Hispanic Outreach – Culturally and linguistically specific services for Spanish-speaking survivors, supported by bilingual staff and access to a language line. Community Education & Prevention – School-based programs, professional trainings, and awareness campaigns to prevent violence before it starts. Who We Serve SAFE serves anyone experiencing or affected by domestic or sexual violence—regardless of age, race, gender, immigration status, sexual orientation, or income level. Many of our clients are women and children fleeing dangerous situations, but we also support male survivors, LGBTQ+ individuals, teens, elderly adults, and survivors living with disabilities. Our service area spans some of Virginia’s most rural counties, where access to transportation, housing, and healthcare can be limited. Our Impact 600+ hotline calls answered annually by trained advocates 200+ survivors and children provided with emergency shelter and housing support each year 100+ legal advocacy appointments scheduled to help survivors obtain protective orders Thousands of youth and adults educated through community outreach, school programs, and training events Over 50% of staff are bilingual or multilingual, ensuring access for Spanish-speaking survivors Pet-Friendly Shelter Saves Lives Research shows that up to 65% of survivors delay leaving an abusive situation due to fear of what will happen to their pets. SAFE is proud to operate one of the few pet-friendly shelters in Virginia, ensuring that no one has to choose between their safety and their beloved animals. Why Your Support Matters SAFE relies heavily on community support to sustain and expand our services. In recent years, many agencies like ours have faced significant cuts to federal funding, even as the need for domestic and sexual violence services continues to grow—especially in rural and underserved communities. By donating through Benevity, you are: Keeping our shelters open and safe Helping survivors rebuild their lives Supporting children who’ve witnessed violence Ensuring survivors can access culturally appropriate services Breaking generational cycles of trauma and abuse Your gift—no matter the size—helps us provide food, shelter, clothing, counseling, safety planning, transportation, and the resources survivors need to regain their independence. A Survivor’s Words: “SAFE was the first place I ever felt truly heard. They helped me and my kids escape a nightmare, and gave us hope again. I’ll never forget the kindness I was shown.” Join Us With your help, SAFE continues to stand in the gap for those who feel voiceless, trapped, or forgotten. Together, we can create a future where every person—regardless of their background or circumstance—has access to safety, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.
