Mission Statement
Our mission is to create opportunity for low- and moderate-income people through affordable housing in diverse, thriving communities.
About This Cause
For housing to be a springboard to a good life, it must exist in a supportive living environment with jobs, quality schools, child care, transportation, health care and support for seniors, with access to parks, community spaces and food and retail services that support a healthy lifestyle. Enterprise develops and preserves affordable housing in communities linking people to opportunities for success. When these links are absent, Enterprise forms partnerships and bridges gaps toward creating more vibrant places for people to live and pursue their dreams. The story of Enterprise begins in 1982 when real estate developer and visionary entrepreneur Jim Rouse founded a new organization to seek out and partner with affordable housing and community development groups all over the country. He wanted to help them tap into resources, tackle challenges and share their knowledge. In naming the organization, Jim and his wife, Enterprise co-founder Patty Rouse, thought of the spirit that had made our country great in the first place, the spirit that had carried us through the Depression and two World Wars, the same spirit that had enabled him to lift himself and his family out of poverty: the spirit of Enterprise. Enterprise is the only housing organization in the U.S. with the expertise to multiply the impact for people and communities. We deliver the capital, develop the programs and advocate for the policies needed to create and preserve well-designed homes that people can afford in inclusive and connected communities. Our talented staff bring agility and expertise in both the public and private sectors across a range of critical areas, and we are dedicated to improving and innovating housing solutions around the country. We developed the national standards for greener, healthier communities, and we're continuously researching and sharing key data and lessons learned with our partners so that affordable homes and resources are more effective – and families succeed. We are guided by exemplary board members – leaders in the public, business and nonprofit sectors. In addition to our headquarters in the Mid-Atlantic, we have offices in markets nationwide, from New York to Los Angeles – as well as local, state and national partnerships. At Enterprise, we bring together the right expertise and know-how to make well-designed homes affordable and change lives. Because we may have similar goals in life, but not the same opportunities – and where you live affects the life you can have.
