Mission Statement

The Lab School of Washington is an innovative learning community fostering scholarship and creativity in students with different learning styles. In an environment of inquiry and hands-on exploration, Lab School students learn to advocate for themselves as they become engaged and compassionate members of a global society.

About This Cause

The Lab School of Washington transforms the way students think about themselves and about learning. We offer bright children with language-based learning differences and ADHD an innovative, arts-infused education that recognizes their talents, capitalizes on their strengths, builds their skills, and shows them how their non-traditional approach to problem-solving and achievement is truly an advantage. Every day, Lab helps students turn differences into advantages. One of the first schools of its kind, The Lab School of Washington was founded by Sally L. Smith in 1967 as a day school for The Kingsbury Center, a diagnostic and tutoring resource for children with learning disabilities. Sally’s youngest son Gary was not having a positive experience in traditional schools. As such, she designed new teaching approaches that used art as a gateway for teaching academic skills. The Academic Club Method is an experiential classroom model developed by Sally Smith that teaches academic subjects through full immersion in the educational material, and is still the backbone of our Lower and Middle School curriculums today. The success of this small-group collaborative approach is measurable and uniquely suited to unlocking the intellectual capacity of young students who learn differently.
