About This Cause

Patronato Benéfico Oriental (PBO) was founded on February 7 th 1976 by Xiomara Dajer de Menendez, Jackeline Gomez de Kelly, Matty Bisonó de Herrera, Clara Negron de Morales and Margarita Llanso, among other ladies of the community of La Romana. In the beginning, the work of the PBO was conceived as support group for the social work that Father Abreu was carrying out towards the vulnerable community of La Romana. Due to his unexpected death in 1977, PBO assumed the responsibility for the continuity of Father Abreu’s work. Through this experience of social support, it was made obvious the great needs of the disadvantaged children of La Romana. It is at that time that the PBO started raising funds for the creation of Hogar del Niño. Hogar del Niño began its operations in 1982 with 13 children at Daycare level, at its present location and where it also housed few orphans. As the years went by Hogar del Niño started adding more grades to their institution. By 1995 the school was equipped to teach students up to 4th grade, by the 2000 it was up to 8th grade and finally in 2005 started the developing of the high school, culminating the first high school graduation in August 2009. Today the institutions receives almost 1900 children everyday, from newborn to 18 years old. Hogar del Niño is the only Institution in La Romana and surroundings prepared to teach Deaf students and it is the only school that integrate children with special needs. Every single student receives 3 meals a day, regular medical and dental care, psychological assessment and support, extracurricular activities (sports, arts, dance, English classes, horticulture, recycling among other options). Patronato Benéfico Oriental sponsors the following programs: Hogar del Niño- From its beginnings in the 1980's as a nursery and elementary school, the Hogar del Niño currently receives more than 1,900 children from newborn to 18 years of age. It is the only institution in La Romana and surrounding areas prepared to educate deaf children and is the only one that integrates children with special needs. The educational model focuses on the multidisciplinary balance, which allows equal attention and relevance of the Liberal Arts and Sciences, including the polytechnic mode, a university and professional technical scholarship program. In addition to quality education, each student receives 3 meals a day, regular medical and dental care, psychological evaluation and support, extracurricular activities such as sports, art, dance, recycling and more. Diagnóstica Social - A centre dedicated to offering advanced medical diagnosis such as MRI´s CT Scans, Mammograms, X-Rays and Doppler amongst others. Diagnostica Social counts with state of the art equipment operated by technical professionals. Our services are accessible to all the communities of the Dominican Republic due to our affordable prices and our social work scheme which offers full and partial financial support to vulnerable communities. InstitutoTécnico PBO (ITPBO)- Designed to nurture and develop career prospects of young adults, aged 16 onwards, ITPBO trains special trades and assist in obtaining well-paying jobs at the technical level and within the local communities. Some of the courses ITPBO offers are Entrepreneurship, Upholstery, Computing, Electricity, Design and Apparel, amongst others. Outreach Program (Bridging the Gap)- Our community outreach program provides support to other NGO’s and vulnerable communities. Around 600,000 people located in Bateyes, orphanages, and local schools, receive free food, vitamins and medical and dental care. PBO Scholarships- Through this program we offer scholarships to disadvantaged students, which have achieved a high academic index and wish to pursue a university or a technical degree. Thanks to this program, PBO is able to provide scholarships to 20% of the Hogar del Niño Alumni. Since the beginning of the program in 2004, we have awarded 131 students with university scholarships. PBO Volunteer Program- This program seeks to strengthen and develop all the initiatives that contribute towards children’s learning through the collaboration with people whose solidary actions and strong sense of social responsibility make it possible to work towards a more just world. PBO Transformation Village @ Villa Hermosa- Since 2015 PBO is supporting the Juan Pablo Duarte Community in Villa Hermosa, the most vulnerable community around La Romana. 35% of our students come from there. In 2022 we begin the construction of a community center that combines our expertise and best practices with the latest advances in innovation, technology and community engagement for social growth and social prosperity. The center, built with sustainable materials and designed for sustainable operations, provides the community and its members with the services, tools, spaces, activities and support key to spark the fire of growth, development and transformation from within. Maker Space - The drastic changes resulting from technological progress represent a great challenge for school systems, which do not prepare students to meet the demands of the new professions generated by the fourth industrial revolution. This produces a large number of graduates who are unable to access the labor market. To change this situation we are working on innovation in education, where students learn by doing, using STEAM methodologies, which will help them to develop the necessary skills for careers with high labor demand. We are working to implement 2 Makerspaces, the first one at Hogar del Niño School, and the second one at the PBO Transformation Village at Villa Hermosa. Idea by PBO - A self-sustainable project, a printing shop that began operations in order to find a comprehensive solution to the demand for printing material for the different programs of the PBO. The purpose is to satisfy the needs of the PBO and to offer a quality service to external clients generating income to contribute to the budget of our social programs. Artistas por los Niños- Established to provide gifted, young artists a venue to expand their creativity and foster entrepreneurship, the program works closely with PBO staff to create the appropriate mechanism to commercialize the artist’s work within local markets. Through the Art Education Fund PBO provide the necessary tools needed to develop their talents, and fund specialized education.
