RIGHTS ACTION

Washington, District of Columbia, 20091 United States

Mission Statement

Rights Action’s mission is to fund community-based organizations in Honduras and Guatemala, carrying out their own human rights, environmental defense and territory defense struggles and projects; funds victims of repression and human rights violations, health harms and natural disasters; and work to hold accountable the U.S. and Canadian governments, multi-national companies, investors and banks (World Bank, etc.) that sometimes - through their policies and operations - help cause and profit from repression and human rights violations, environmental harms and forced evictions, corruption and impunity in Honduras and Guatemala.

About This Cause

Founded in the U.S. in 1995, Rights Action grew out of Guatemala Partners that, itself, was created from the merger of PEACE for Guatemala and Guatemala Health Rights Support Project, both founded in 1983. In 1999 Rights Action, was invorporated in Canada, so now is a tax-deductible, non-profit organization incorporated in both the U.S. and Canada. Policies and actions of the U.S. and Canadian governments, of the U.S. military, of North American companies and investors, and of the World Bank oftentimes cause and benefit from repression, human rights violations, environmental harms, impunity and corruption in Honduras and Guatemala. Rights Action documents and denounces these policies and actions. We educate and work to hold accountable our governments, inter-governmental institutions, companies and investors for the repression, violations and harms, and we fund and support Hondurans and Guatemalans working and struggling for their collective and individual rights, and for Mother Earth, the environment. Why “Rights Action”? Years ago, we changed our name to Rights Action to highlight the relationship of rights and action: we fund and support people and communities working and struggling in defense and promotion of their individual and collective rights, of their lands and territories, and of their waters, forests and livelihoods.
