Mission Statement

The mission of Jesuit Refugee Service is to accompany, serve and advocate for the rights of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons, who rank among the world's poorest. We seek to serve refugees as their companions, this is key to everything we do. As an international Catholic organization and a work of the Jesuits, we are inspired by the compassion of Jesus, who made it his mission to reach the most marginalized people of his time. Our services promote hope by enabling refugees to continue their education and by equipping them with life-changing skills. Advocacy is crucially important, based on our deep belief in the intrinsic dignity of each and every person. We work so that refugees may find protection, humane living conditions and durable solutions for their future.

About This Cause

Jesuit Refugee Service/USA is an international Catholic non-governmental organization whose mission is to accompany, serve and advocate for the rights of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. JRS/USA witnesses to God's presence in vulnerable and often forgotten people driven from their homes by conflict, natural disaster, economic injustice, or violation of their human rights. As one of the ten geographic regions of Jesuit Refugee Service, JRS/USA serves as the major refugee outreach arm of U.S. Jesuits and their institutional ministries, mobilizing their response to refugee situations in the U.S. and abroad. Through advocacy and fundraising efforts, JRS/USA also provides support for the work of JRS throughout the world. JRS/USA gives help, hope, ear and voice to vulnerable people on the move by being witness to their plight; by relieving their human suffering and restoring hope; by addressing the root causes of their displacement and by improving international responses to refugee situations. Our History: More than 30 years ago, Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., then the renowned head of the Jesuit order, was deeply shocked by the harrowing plight of the Vietnamese boat people and determined to see what the Jesuits could do to help. In 1980, Fr. Arrupe founded the Jesuit Refugee Service which has since grown into an international organization that serves 949,000 people with 1,800 staff, Jesuits, religious and lay people from different faiths, serving refugees in camps, urban areas, war zones and detention centers in 45 countries.
