Mission Statement
At Shepherd’s Table, we aim to improve quality of life, create a pathway towards self-sufficiency, and inspire hope for the most vulnerable in our community. We welcome every individual who walks through our door—a population experiencing food insecurity, homelessness, and poverty. Our fresh, delicious meals are curated by professional chefs and designed to maximize nutrition. But it doesn’t end with food– through case management and each program we offer, a fresh meal can be the entry point to a larger journey of healing and empowerment.
About This Cause
Shepherd's Table first opened on December 16, 1983, in a modest house behind the First Baptist Church in Silver Spring. We are proud to serve Montgomery County, MD, and the Washington Metro region as the oldest and most comprehensive resource center and meal service for people experiencing food insecurity, homelessness or poverty. In our 41-year history, we have never missed an evening meal, providing a healthy, nutritious meal through compassion and hospitable service. As the community's need has grown, we have continued to be a place where people who are hungry can access a hot, delicious meal without any questions asked. More than 3,000 volunteers partner with us annually, sharing their time, talent, and huge hearts to bring our mission to life and to offer warmth, respect, friendship, and support to our clients and meal guests. Our Resource Center assists more than 100 clients daily, providing services such as a mailing address, tokens, information and referrals, crisis intervention, immigration assistance, and other basic needs. Additionally, the resource center provides prescription assistance for clients in need of help paying for their medications. Our Clothes Closet provides seasonally appropriate apparel, shoes, and accessories to more than 100 individuals every week. The clothing is in excellent condition and helps to enhance the dignity and well-being of our guests and their families. Our Eye Clinic is the only free clinic in Montgomery County and the only program that requires eligibility. Patients can get a new pair of glasses each year as long as they do not have vision insurance, are Montgomery County residents, and are at least 18 years of age. Shepherd's Table is a vital resource for individuals in need, and its work is accomplished through the efforts of a dedicated staff, hardworking volunteers, and thousands of supporters and donors. We have established strong partnerships with local businesses, organizations, schools, foundations, and places of worship. These partnerships benefit not only Shepherd's Table's clients and guests but also those who give generously of their time, talent, and financial resources.
