Mission Statement

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation envisions an America where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer persons are ensured of their basic equal rights - and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work, and in the community. Through research, education and outreach, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation encourages LGBT Americans to live their lives openly and seeks to change the hearts and minds of Americans to the side of equality. The HRC Foundation was founded in 1986 as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, based in Washington, D.C.; the organization is affiliated with the Human Rights Campaign.

About This Cause

The HRC Foundation works to build capacity and change policies, practices, hearts, and minds in a range of institutions that shape the daily lives of the LGBTQ+ community. The HRC Foundation shines a bright light on economic and social policies that leave too many behind. These include inequities in healthcare and education, the dissemination of hate-filled dis- and misinformation about our lives, homophobia, transphobia, anti-LGBTQ+ violence, and systems that often fail the most vulnerable among us. Through public education, research, and policy and practice change, the Foundation’s impact can be felt in schools, factory floors, corporate suites, and places of worship. It touches LGBTQ+ lives from childhood through end-of-life, people of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, abilities, and religious beliefs in big cities and small towns in the United States and across the globe. Created in 1984, our team members identify the problems and challenges LGBTQ+ people face, then follow a clear model for effecting change: -Building understanding of LGBTQ+ people and shaping the public debate through public education, research, and resources; -Changing policies and practices through technical assistance and pioneering benchmarking tools; -Empowering strategic partners, community leaders, and allies to be stronger advocates for equality through capacity-building, training, and innovative tools; -Leveraging relationships with these partners, advocates, and allies to advance LGBTQ+ policy objectives at the local, state, national, and international levels. _____________________________________________________________ Programs funded in part or in full through the HRC Foundation (thehrcfoundation.org) include: All Children—All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies). It provides resource development, technical assistance, and training. Public Education and Research produces written resources and conducts original quantitative and qualitative research exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people. The HBCU Program is the only national project that partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities to establish an LGBTQ+ inclusive campus climate. Health and Aging provides resources and training to help thousands of healthcare facilities adopt inclusive policies and practices to better serve LGBTQ+ patients and employees. HIV and Health Equity develops public education and capacity-building programs to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black and Latine communities. Transgender Justice Initiative leads economic empowerment programs, capacity-building initiatives, community engagement efforts, and public safety education campaigns that combat the discrimination faced by transgender people. Welcoming Schools is the only bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+-specific training and resources with an intersectional lens, developed for use in elementary schools. The Financial Literacy Program provides LGBTQ+ adults with greater access to financial education and resources. By using WorthIt, you will be provided with community-centered information and guidance along with solutions-focused assessments of your own financial wellness and individualized feedback for growth. Workplace Equality advances equality for LGBTQ+ workers by adopting and implementing inclusive policies, practices, and benefits in the U.S. and abroad. Youth Well-Being provides professional development to over 5,000 youth-serving professionals annually through the annual Time to THRIVE conference, webinars, participation at major national convenings, and amplifying the stories of HRC Youth Ambassadors. The program also convenes HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council. The Human Rights Campaign and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation together serve as America’s largest civil rights organization, working to achieve LGBTQ+ equality. By inspiring and engaging individuals and communities, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and realize a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
