Mission Statement

Health Volunteers Overseas improves the availability and quality of health care through the education, training, and professional development of the health workforce in resource-scarce countries. HVO envisions a world where all people have access to high-quality health care delivered by local health professionals.

About This Cause

We implement innovative, effective programs that offer teaching, training and continuing education to local health care workers in developing countries. We focus on meeting the needs of the host country and institution, and creating programs that are sustainable and build local capacity. The focus of HVO programs is on building local capacity through the delivery of appropriate education programs that provide the local health care professional with the knowledge, skills and ability needed to address the health care needs of their country. HVO projects are staffed by trained, licensed health care professionals (physicians, nurses, dentists, physical therapists and others) willing to donate their time and expertise to work side-by-side with their colleagues. HVO volunteers come from private practice as well as academia. Many are leaders in their field, known for their professional, clinical and academic accomplishments. HVO staff and volunteers work closely with a variety of partner institutions (hospitals, clinics, universities, schools) in the project design, development and implementation stages. No two projects are the same as the needs and priorities vary from country to country and from institution to institution. HVO support may include: clinical education, curricula development or updating, faculty mentoring, co-teaching of new content, professional development through funding attendance at professional meetings or workshops, proving access to educational materials such as textbooks, manikins, journals, internet access and more. In 2020,the rapid emergence of COVID-19 and its dramatic impact on the world necessitated a pivot to online models of education. Our partners and the needs of the health professionals we work with globally had not changed – only the methods of providing that education. HVO worked quickly to pivot to the virtual world, and is currently supporting more than 40 e-learning projects with more in the planning stage. These projects utilize HVO’s new Remote Education Interface (REI) which is built on Google Sites. It was specifically designed with HVO partners’ needs in mind – the platform needed to be user-friendly, operate on low-bandwidth, allow for synchronous and asynchronous learning, have an off-line mode, be mobile compatible, etc. In 2021 more than 180 highly trained volunteers contributed more than 4,200 hours of virtual education to more than 48 projects. These active projects were conducted in Bhutan, Cambodia, Ghana, India, Laos, Malawi, Myanmar, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. In addition, thanks to donor support, HVO was able to facilitate the attendance of dozens of health professionals at a variety of international meetings and seminars in 2021. HVO is looking at reopening projects for field assignments in mid to late 2022.
