HERBIE HANCOCK INSTITUTE OF JAZZ

Washington, District of Columbia, 20015-2014 United States

Mission Statement

To offer the world’s most promising young musicians college level training by internationally acclaimed jazz masters, and to present public school music education programs for young people around the world.

About This Cause

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz is the world's leading jazz education organization. The Institute preserves, perpetuates and expands jazz as a global art form, and utilizes jazz as a means to unite people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. Founded in 1986 as the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, the organization began operating as the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz in January 2019 in recognition of Mr. Hancock’s commitment to the Institute since its establishment, his expert guidance as Institute Chairman, and his immense contributions to and impact on music, education and humanity. All of the Institute’s programs are provided free of charge to students, schools and communities worldwide. These programs help fill a tremendous void in arts education left by budget cuts in public school funding, and use jazz as the medium to encourage imaginative thinking, creativity, a positive self-image, and respect for one’s own and others’ cultural heritage. For more than 30 years, the Institute has brought young, aspiring musicians together with renowned jazz artists and educators through its International Competition; intensive jazz performance college program; and thousands of instrument training sessions, master classes and other jazz education programs in more than a dozen cities across the U.S. and worldwide. In partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Institute has presented International Jazz Day since 2012. Each year on April 30th, people on all continents pay tribute to jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.
