Mission Statement

Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. & Northern Virginia (Habitat DC-NOVA) works to reduce poverty housing and homelessness in the national capital area by building decent, affordable, energy-efficient homes for low income, working families. Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

About This Cause

Habitat DC-NOVA sells homes to families who would otherwise be unable to afford a home. Together with our partners, we offer low-interest mortgages and no-interest gap financing on the below market prices of the homes we build. Prospective homeowners make reduced down payments and contribute 300 hours of sweat equity towards construction of their own home and those of their Habitat neighbors. Habitat DC-NOVA reinvests the revenue from home sales into the construction of future houses. In order to qualify, applicants must demonstrate a need for improved housing, an ability to pay, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, a willingness to partner with us in performing "sweat equity," and willingness to participate in an education program: In order to accomplish our mission we play a combination of roles. First, we are a social services agency, reaching out to those who need affordable housing. Our staff offer support to homebuyer families throughout the purchase process. Homebuyers are provided credit counseling and financial literacy training. We are also a construction company, using volunteer and AmeriCorps labor, and requiring each homebuyer to invest sweat equity helping to build their home and the houses of their Habitat neighbors. This enables us to build professional quality homes at affordable prices. Finally, we work with families to secure affordable mortgages. Homebuyers enter into 30-year, low to no-interest mortgages with Habitat DC-NOVA or our partner organizations, keeping their monthly payments at a fraction of comparable rental costs in Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia. Habitat DC-NOVA was formed through the combining of DC Habitat and Habitat NOVA in early 2022. As a regional organization, Habitat DC-NOVA leverages over 60 years of combined experience addressing the housing crisis with innovative solutions.
