Mission Statement

Established in 1989, the (CIEL) uses the power of law to protect the environment, promote human rights and ensure a just and sustainable society. With offices in Washington, DC and Geneva, Switzerland, CIEL's team of attorneys, policy experts and support staff works to achieve a world where the law reflects the interconnection between humans and the environment, respects the limits of the planet, protects the dignity and equality of each person, and encourages all of earthâs inhabitants to live in balance with each other. CIEL pursues its vision by developing new legal tools and strategies to: strengthen international protections for human rights and the environment; empower communities to use international law to defend their rights; ensure international finance safeguards human rights and the environment; and increase transboundary corporate accountability.

About This Cause

Since 1989, the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) has used the power of law to protect the environment, promote human rights, and ensure a just and sustainable society. We are guided by a long-term strategic vision to accelerate the phase out of fossil fuels, stop the plastic pollution crisis, protect children and families from toxic risks, stop illegal logging in forests that are vital to biodiversity and the climate, and ensure that human rights drive development. To achieve this vision, CIEL works to counter-balance corporate power, promote environmental democracy, confront the private and public actors that finance climate destruction and rights abuses, and strengthen the human rights standards that govern state and corporate conduct. CIEL collaborates closely with partners around the world with an approach based on mutual respect, long term commitments, and movement building. CIELâs team of attorneys, policy experts, and support staff works to provide legal counsel and advocacy, policy research, and capacity building across our three program areas: Climate & Energy, Environmental Health, and People, Land, & Resources.
