Mission Statement

Our mission is to help rebuild lives with compassion by providing shelter and services to prevent homelessness and empower people as they transition toward employment, housing and self-sufficiency. Our vision is to serve as a national model for how a community cares for its homeless. We strive to break the cycle of homelessness by providing a place of belonging, life-changing programs, and a broad continuum of support to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

About This Cause

The Light House is both a facility and a program. Physically located in a 24,400 square foot facility in Annapolis, Maryland, we provide emergency shelter and transitional housing for individuals and families who are homeless as well as permanent supportive housing for women. We offer life-changing programs through a case management centered model that includes, counseling and referral services, basic life skills, and wellness and job training programs that help clients reclaim hope and independence in their lives. Our belief is that with the love and compassion of staff and volunteers we can make a huge difference in the lives of so many. The Light House is 24 hour, seven day a week program that provides a structured environment in combination with professional clinical services to support and promote behavioral change and recovery, while empowering the client to gain the tools towards self-sufficiency. Each client progresses through the program via a variety of services that are tailored according to his or her needs and capacities. Interpersonal and group living skills are promoted through community activities. The average length of stay is 90 days for individuals and six months for families, with the possibility of extensions. The program incorporates substance abuse and mental health treatment with ancillary interventions, i.e. nursing education, psychiatric consultation/evaluation, medication monitoring, case management and job readiness training, etc. The program experience is designed to empower clients to make choices that will allow them to live safely and independently. Five Case Managers with diverse backgrounds in counseling, mental health and case management work closely with the clients along with an Addictions Counselor, a Client Service Manager who manages the day-to-day program routine and Resident Assistants who work in shifts to cover the round-the-clock services. Other professional outside service providers are also provided as part of the Light House multidisciplinary team. The Light House recognizes that to end the cycle of homelessness, people need to have sustainable employment skills that will allow them to make a living wage so they can afford permanent housing. To reach that goal The Light House developed a 16-week employment curriculum, Building Employment Success Training (B.E.S.T.), a paid internship training program that includes soft skills training and hands-on training in Culinary Arts and Facilities Maintenance and Landscaping. The program also includes a volunteer component. Culinary students attend ServSafe classes that are taught and tested on-site. Participants receive job search assistance from case managers and a full time employment specialist, career closet consulting, and interview preparation while working at their internship. At the conclusion of each session, the students are recognized for their hard work with a graduation ceremony and certificate of completion in the BEST program. --- What is a social enterprise? Social enterprises are businesses that tackle social problems, benefiting an underserved population by delivering outcomes based on a specific mission. They create revenue from selling goods and services in the open market, but they reinvest their profits back into their programs and the local community. The Light House mission is rebuilding lives in order to break the cycle of homelessness. Our Social Enterprise bottom line is providing living wage employment for those experiencing homelessness. We believe you cannot have sustainable housing without sustainable employment. This project is about creating JOBS.
