Mission Statement

The Society for Women's Health Research is dedicated to promoting research on biological sex differences in disease and improving women's health through science, policy, and education.

About This Cause

Founded in 1990 by a group of physicians, medical researchers, and health advocates, SWHR is addressing unmet needs and research gaps in women’s health. Thanks to SWHR’s efforts, women are now routinely included in most major medical research studies and scientists are considering sex as a variable in their research. Today, SWHR convenes interdisciplinary stakeholders in health care that specifically, predominantly, disproportionately or differently affect women, and advocates for policy change to close gaps in research and access to care. We work to make women's health mainstream through diversity in clinical trials, removing barriers in access to care and coverage, and ensure more women and women of color are in leadership positions across the biomedical research workforce. Our education and outreach efforts work to empower women in their health, educate clinicians on women's health, and encourage a robust pipeline of the women's health research workforce.
