Mission Statement
As young people in our community grow up, they develop habits, attitudes, and abilities that they take into adulthood. Too often destructive patterns of behavior become ingrained through repeated negative interactions within families or communities. Our role at the Boys & Girls Clubs is to ensure that positive youth development happens--that those developing habits and attitudes are healthy and put them on the path to becoming productive, caring, responsible adults. Vi Ripken, George Englesson and several other community leaders realized that many children in Aberdeen lacked after school activities and were at risk of becoming delinquents. Some of these citizens had been members of Boys & Girls Clubs while growing up in other areas and knew that Harford County’s children would benefit by having a Club. By 1991, a board of directors was in place; seed money was raised; and the first Club was opened with 60 children at the old Aberdeen High School. Today BGCHC serves over 7,000 youth.
About This Cause
A leading advocate for youth, Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County is committed to ensuring that every child has access to a safe place after school and during the summer where they can build the knowledge, skills and behaviors to put them on the path to a great future. For more than 25 years the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County have opened their blue doors to over 35,000 County youth. 27 years later, Boys & Girls Clubs are serving more than 7,000 kids at their 5 Clubs in Aberdeen, Havre de Grace, Magnolia Middle, Bel Air, and Edgewood. Today, when you walk into a Club, you can see a lot of exciting things such as STEM labs, high definition music studios, and hot meals at dinner time. Always expanding, recent acquisitions include Camp Hidden Valley, a 180 acre campground, the Aberdeen Family Swim Center, and a beautiful baseball field outside of the Aberdeen Club. In the summer of 2016, we opened a new community garden and outdoor learning lab.
