About This Cause

The Legacy Awards The Hurston/Wright Legacy AwardTM honors the best in Black literature in the United States and around the globe. Introduced in 2001, the Legacy Award was the first national award presented to Black writers by a national organization of Black writers. Each fall, writers and publishers are invited to submit fiction, nonfiction and poetry books published that year. Panels of acclaimed writers serve as judges to select nominees, finalists and winners in each category. Since the program debuted in 2002, more than 250 books have been recognized as honorees. The annual ceremony is held the third Friday in October. The Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers The Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers recognizes excellence by Black college students in the categories of fiction and poetry. It was the first program created when the foundation was formed. Each year, undergraduate and graduate students submit unpublished work to be judged by award-winning authors. More than 80 students have been honored since the competition debuted in 1991; more than 25 of them have gone on to publish books. Writing Workshops Multiple workshops serve emerging and mid-career writers working in the genres of nonfiction, fiction and poetry. Participants receive intensive, professional instruction and feedback from renowned authors, journalists, agents and editors. More than a thousand writers have participated in workshops since the first session in 1996. Master Classes Award-winning authors discuss craft and sources of inspiration during an interactive seminar with adult writers at all stages of their careers. Readings and Book Clubs The Book Club Initiative connects fans of black literature with their favorite authors. Author Pages on www.hurstonwright.org are a resource for readers, book clubs, and others to discover Black writers. Thousands of readers have attended Hurston/Wright public readings and programs held in local libraries and bookstores.
