Mission Statement

First Book is a leading non-profit social enterprise that provides brand-new books and educational resources to children ages 0-18.

About This Cause

First Book's mission is to provide high quality new books and educational resources to children in need from birth through age 18. Our work addresses the critical factor affecting education—access to books—by permanently breaking down the barriers that limit a child's potential and elevating their level of education. First Book was founded in 1992 after Kyle Zimmer, a corporate lawyer, mentored children at a soup kitchen. Shocked to discover the children had no books at home or at the shelter, she researched the issue and co-founded First Book. Today, First Book is the largest non-profit organization focused on access to educational resources in North America. First Book has pioneered innovative and award-winning systems that have distributed more than 150 million books to children in schools and pre-schools, libraries, shelters, food banks, and other programs serving children in need across the United States and Canada.
