Mission Statement

Our mission is to improve and promote the health of women and newborns and to strengthen the nursing profession through the delivery of superior advocacy, research, education and other professional and clinical resources to nurses and other health care professionals.

About This Cause

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is the foremost nursing authority that advances the health care of women and newborns through advocacy, research and the creation of high quality, evidence-based standards of care. AWHONN’s mission is to promote the health of women and newborns. AWHONN’s represents 350,000 nurses who are on the frontlines in hospitals and prenatal facilities providing care and counseling to pregnant women throughout the U.S. As the standard-bearing organization for nurses who care for women and infants, AWHONN’s sphere of influence in the U.S. comprises nurses clinically active in mother/baby nursing and academia. Since 1969, AWHONN has provided nurses with the resources they need to unite science and compassion in order to deliver the highest level of care to women and newborns. AWHONN members are primarily registered nurses, nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, advanced practice nurses and clinical nurse specialists who work throughout the U.S. in hospitals, independent practices, universities and community clinics. AWHONN empowers its members with educational resources, evidence-based research and the support they need to provide the highest level of patient care. AWHONN mandates the best available evidence guide nursing practice. Therefore, it creates guidelines, books and other resources to provide nurses with information rooted in research and science. In 1969, AWHONN developed the hallmark publication, Standards for Professional Nursing Practice in the Care of Women and Newborns. Now in its 7th edition, it is the worldwide standard for how nurses and hospitals care for these patients. Furthermore, AWHONN provides in-person, online and self-study options to help members keep learning. AWHONN is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. More than ever, patients understand the importance of dedicated, expert nurses. Nurses are trusted to provide more expertise, judgment, and direct patient care than ever before. Nurses are the first and most frequent point of contact in healthcare settings. And patients routinely rank nurses as the most trusted healthcare professionals. Every Woman, Every Baby is the charitable giving program for AWHONN. Tax-deductible contributions support professional development for members, research to improve nursing practice and patient care, and education and activities promoting the health of women and newborns.
