Mission Statement

Suited for Change's mission is to break down barriers to self-sufficiency by providing professional clothing, career and life skills education to low-income women. Our goal is to increase women’s employment and job retention.

About This Cause

Understanding the multitude of challenges low-income women face while seeking employment, SFC addresses barriers unaccounted for by many workforce programs: business etiquette, confidence-building, and interview and professional work attire. By providing these essential assets through our Suiting Program and Workshops, SFC helps women overcome these often-overlooked obstacles to career readiness. All SFC clients currently participate in workforce development programs and are referred to SFC through the programs’ case managers. Our goal is to enable low-income women to increase their employment and job retention potential and to contribute to their economic independence. Our Suiting Program provides women with these resources through a one-on-one shopping experience at the SFC Boutique with a trained volunteer stylist. Clients initially receive two high-quality outfits (plus shoes and accessories) for interviews and are invited to return for three more outfits upon securing a job. During personal suiting appointments, our stylists mentor clients about the importance of personal presentation in the workplace and ask exploratory questions to help clients feel more prepared for the open-ended questions characteristic of most interviews. In addition, SFC provides two types of workshops to support career readiness: “Module I: Job Seeker” and “Module II: Job Retention.” Business professionals, who have been trained in SFC’s curriculum, volunteer to teach these five-week workshop series. We cover topics including conflict management, critical thinking, and self-advocacy in the workplace. SFC is currently developing a Financial Literacy workshop to be implemented in Fall 2017.
